Old Wood Pallet Became a Welcome Sign With an Unexpected Way to Hold Flowers

One board removed from an old wood pallet was enough to make a front-door sign that also holds flowers. Instead of covering the rough wood or building a box onto it, Homedit contributor Morena Hockley used the board as the full background and created the flower holder across its surface.

Yellow stain changes the unfinished pallet wood, while nails and blue twine form the outline of a vase below the painted WELCOME lettering. Artificial flower stems slip behind the string, turning a flat piece of wood into a sign with flowers extending from its face.

One Pallet Board Provides the Entire Backing

The project starts with one long board removed from a wood pallet. Nails and debris need to come out before the wood is used, but the existing holes, grain, knots, and uneven surface can remain visible rather than being concealed.

Yellow Dye Covers the Raw Wood

Ultra Dye in a yellow shade covers the face of the pallet board while leaving the wood grain visible beneath the color. This gives the sign its background before any lettering or flower holder is added.

Nails Map Out the Shape of the Vase

Instead of attaching a jar, pot, or pocket to the board, a paper vase template determines where the nails go. Nails hammered around the outline create anchor points for the string and establish the shape before the paper is removed.

Blue Twine Turns the Nail Pattern Into a Vase

Twine wraps from nail to nail across the lower section of the board, following the vase outline and crossing through its center. The finished string work stays flat against the wood but leaves enough space behind the strands to secure flower stems.

Stenciled Letters Mark Out the Welcome Message

Letter stencils position WELCOME down the upper half of the board. Pencil outlines keep the spacing consistent without requiring vinyl lettering or a separate wooden cutout.

Black Paint Makes the Letters Stand Out

Black paint fills each penciled letter with a fine brush, creating a sharp contrast against the yellow wood. The vertical arrangement also leaves most of the lower section open for the string vase.

Flower Stems Slide Straight Into the String

Artificial flowers turn the flat string outline into a usable flower holder. Their stems slide between the blue strands and the pallet board, so no vase needs to be mounted to the wood.

Scrap Pallet Wood Gets a New Place by the Front Door

The finished sign keeps the long, narrow shape of the board taken from the pallet. Yellow stain, vertical WELCOME lettering, a string-art vase, and white flowers turn the salvaged piece into decor that can hang or rest beside the entrance.
