IRS unveils Tax Compliance Report for taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service has introduced a new feature in taxpayers’ IRS Individual Online Accounts: a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report that can be used when taxpayers apply for a job, loan, government benefit or another service that requires tax compliance information.

Taxpayers can securely obtain and download the report, which they can pass along to a financial institution such as a bank, as well as government agencies and other organizations that can use the report’s built-in digital certificate to verify its authenticity. The report could eventually supplant use of the most recent tax return when applying for loans and government benefits.

The certificate helps protect taxpayer information and maintains the integrity of the report.

“By providing a secure, digitally authenticated report, the IRS is making it easier for taxpayers to access and share important information while protecting privacy and data integrity,” said IRS CEO Frank Bisignano in a statement Thursday.

Each Tax Compliance Report will include an IRS-issued digital certificate that confirms its authenticity. The verification features will be embedded directly in the downloadable file, according to the IRS. Taxpayers will be able to access and download their report at any time through their IRS Individual Online Account. Each report will include the same standardized authentication and verification features.

The IRS has been adding more features to its individual, business and tax professional online accounts over the years, including W-2 and 1095-A information returns last year in the individual account. The latest addition appears to be a significant step forward and comes despite severe cutbacks in the IRS’s technology budget and staffing.
