This $200 UO Slipcover Made Me Rethink My ‘Timeless’ Sofa

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m over timeless couches (for this month anyways). I want fun: cheetah print and polka dots, coquette bows and whimsical, fluttering butterflies. The problem is that there’s nothing particularly fun about forking over thousands for a sofa you might want to replace in a couple of years. Or, worse for someone like myself who lives in a third-floor NYC walk-up, calling the Couch Doctor as a final Hail Mary to get the thing out.

Urban Outfitters’ new Universal Cotton Sofa Slipcover, available in nine of-the-moment colors and patterns, is a low-lift way to thoroughly indulge whatever sofa trend tickles your fancy without ever really having to commit. The slouchy, ‘grandma’-style silhouette fits most couches – hence the ‘universal’ – while conveniently tapping another trend you may have been eyeing. (Tastemakers like Nate Berkus insist the once-outdated slipcover is back.)

And don’t get it twisted: each statement might be having a moment, but they’re not rooted in nothing. Take, for instance, the powder-pink-on-chocolate-brown antique floral – a pattern that, as someone like Shea McGee would argue (who recently taught me the secret to styling one), is forever.

Style aside, UO’s Universal Cotton Slipcovers put a protective layer between the probably precious sofa you already own and any children or pets sharing the space.

So if you’re feeling florals today, then want blue pinstripes à la Nancy Meyers come next summer, you actually can. Simply give the cover a wash (machine washable, by the way), tuck it away in the linen closet and, like anything else in your wardrobe, slip it on again when you’re back in the mood.
