As Loren explains, there are practical benefits to following Gwyneth’s example, too. ‘It is not only beautiful. The clay has tiny holes that allow air and water to move through it. This can help plant roots breathe,’ he explains. The trade-off, however, is that terracotta dries out faster than plastic, which is worth bearing in mind if you live in warmer states.
Choosing plants that naturally enjoy sun and drier conditions can make maintenance much easier. ‘Lavender, rosemary, olive trees, ornamental grasses, agave, and other plants that enjoy sun and dry soil can work well,’ Taylor says. Plants that prefer consistently moist soil will need more regular attention.
Scale is important, too. Smaller pots can easily get lost on a patio, while oversized urns, just like Gwyneht’s, give the space a stronger sense of structure. ‘I like using large planters because they give roots more room to grow. Their soil also stays wet longer,’ Taylor says. ‘A large planter can hold several plants. You can place a tall plant in the middle, shorter plants around it, and a plant that hangs over the edge. This makes one planter look like a small garden.’
Herbs are also particularly lovely as garden entertaining moves into fall. Rosemary, thyme, basil, and mint add texture and fragrance while also being useful. ‘When the sun warms their leaves, they release a gentle smell. People can also pick a few leaves for a drink or summer meal,’ Taylor adds.
Perhaps the best thing about terracotta is the way it ages. Fresh clay can have an orange finish, but weather and water gradually give it a more weathered character.
However, there is one thing to watch as winter approaches. Terracotta can crack if water trapped inside the soil freezes. ‘In cold areas, the planters may need to be covered, lifted from the ground, or moved to a safer place,’ Taylor warns.
While our minds may be leaning more into interior design as we sit on the fringe of fall, Gwyneth’s garden reminds us just how stunning terracotta can be – all year round.
