You never know what’s around the corner. Every day, we drive to the grocery store, take short flights to visit relatives, and enjoy recreational sports. Our lives are full of ordinary activities that occasionally result in catastrophic accidents.
However, every so often, something so bizarre happens that it sounds more like the plot of a Hollywood movie than real life.
We all know that accidents can happen anywhere, often with serious consequences, but tales like these might make you want to rethink your life insurance.
1. Sucked from a plane window
A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany, returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a cabin window detached. A 61-year-old passenger seated beside it was pulled out head-first, up to his shoulders, before fellow passengers dragged him back inside, according to CBS News.
He was hospitalized with friction burns and neck and shoulder injuries but was otherwise reported in good condition. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, landed normally.
2. A metal bar through the windshield
A woman pregnant with twins was driving a cargo van north on Interstate 15 near Temecula, California, in July 2026 when a metal bar fell from a truck ahead, pierced her windshield and struck her in the abdomen.
The California Highway Patrol described what followed as a miracle: The woman sustained only minor injuries, and the twins were reported to be fine. A CHP officer later credited the windshield with slowing the bar just enough to prevent something far worse.
3. Swallowed by a whale
Adrian Simancas was kayaking with his father in the Strait of Magellan off Chilean Patagonia in February 2025 when a humpback whale surfaced beneath him, engulfing him and his kayak. Seconds later, the whale let him go.
“I thought I was dead,” Simancas told The Associated Press. His father, filming from a few yards away, talked him through the swim to safety. Both men reached shore uninjured.
4. 84-floor elevator free fall
Six people, including a pregnant woman, stepped into an express elevator after dinner on the 95th floor of Chicago’s former John Hancock Center in November 2018. A hoist rope broke, and the car descended 84 floors before coming to a stop near the 11th floor, where firefighters spent nearly three hours breaking through a brick wall to reach them.
Nobody was hurt. A later inspection found the elevator was never actually in free fall; the six remaining ropes held, and the car came to a controlled stop. That distinction probably mattered less to the people inside it.
5. Logs through the length of an SUV
A Georgia driver rear-ended a logging truck in Whitfield County in October 2019, sending several large logs through the windshield and clear out the back of the vehicle. Photos released by the county fire department show the driver’s seat damaged and pushed into a reclined position, surrounded by shattered glass.
The driver suffered only minor injuries, according to NBC News. Firefighters had to cut through the logs before they could free him.
6. Pickup dangling over Idaho gorge
A couple in their 60s lost control of their Ford F-350 while towing a 30-foot camper across the Malad Gorge bridge on Interstate 84 in Idaho in March 2021. The truck went over the rail and hung nose-down, roughly 100 feet above the gorge, held only by the safety chains connecting it to the camper still on the bridge.
A state trooper and a sheriff’s deputy borrowed extra chains from a passing semi to secure the truck. A rescue team then rappelled down and hauled the couple and their two small dogs back to the deck. Neither person had life-threatening injuries, Idaho State Police said.
7. Two 15-ton slabs of concrete
A truck hauling concrete segments lost its load on a motorway near Adelaide, Australia, when traffic merged in front of it. Two 15-ton slabs crashed into three cars parked on the shoulder, shoving them into two pedestrians standing beside a broken-down vehicle.
One person was taken to the hospital with a suspected broken arm; two others had minor injuries. “Police are amazed that no one was killed during this incident,” South Australia Police said in a statement.
8. A 5-foot saw blade in the hood
A driver on the Chongqing-Guizhou Expressway in China heard a bang, then saw white smoke. A 5-foot industrial saw blade had fallen from a truck traveling in the opposite direction, rolled across the median and buried itself roughly 20 inches into the hood of his pickup, stopping just short of the driver’s seat.
He walked away unhurt from the 2015 incident. Police reportedly said a slightly different speed or angle could have killed him.
Stranger than fiction
The odds of any one of these accidents happening are incredibly small. That probably offers little comfort to the people who lived through them or to their loved ones.
