He Rebuilt His Deep Pantry So Every Shelf Lights Up When the Door Opens
Want a pantry that stores more without losing food behind rows of boxes and containers? Deep shelves become harder to use once the front fills up, leaving food hidden in the back and large appliances competing for space.
Reddit user u/dota2duhfuq had that problem in a narrow pantry beside the refrigerator. Three dark wood shelves held spices, containers, cookbooks, bags, and pantry staples, while large gaps between them left part of the closet height unused.
He removed the old shelves, repaired and painted the walls, then built five floating shelves with reclaimed oak fronts and LED strips underneath. Rather than spacing them at equal intervals, he planned the lower shelves around larger kitchen equipment, including a KitchenAid mixer that would not fit inside the kitchen cabinets.
The New Layout Used the Depth Without Wasting the Height
The original shelves extended more than 21 inches toward the back wall, where smaller packages could disappear behind rows of containers. One Reddit user joked about losing items to the “deep shadows” of the pantry, and dota2duhfuq agreed: “Things definitely went to die in the back of the old one.”
His replacement plan divided the 26-inch-wide, 21.75-inch-deep pantry into five shelf levels instead of three. The spacing changed toward the bottom to make room for larger kitchen equipment, while the lowest opening left space for a rolling step stool used to reach the upper shelves.
Walls Needed Repair Before the New Shelves Could Go In
Removing the original shelves exposed mounting marks and damaged sections across the walls. Those surfaces were repaired and painted before the replacement shelves went in.
MDF Formed the New Shelf Surfaces
Instead of using thick solid lumber for every shelf, the owner built them from MDF with 1/8-inch hardboard underneath. Reclaimed oak was saved for the supports and front edges.
The layered construction also created space to incorporate lighting beneath each shelf without leaving the electrical components exposed across the finished pantry.
White Formica Covered Both Sides
White Formica covered both sides of the MDF panels, replacing the dark wood surfaces with shelves that reflect more of the installed light.
A channel across each panel provided a position for the LED system. Once installed, the lights sit beneath the shelf rather than hanging from the wall or taking up storage space.
Reclaimed Oak Supports Were Mounted to the Walls
Oak cleats were attached across the back and side walls at each planned shelf height. The shelf panels could then sit over this framework without conventional brackets beneath them.
Five sets of supports also allowed the owner to determine each opening before installing the finished panels, including the larger spaces reserved for appliances.
Side Cleats Support the Deep Shelves

Wiring Runs Behind the Drywall
Wires were dropped behind the drywall beside a stud and brought out at each shelf level. The transformer sits beneath the bottom shelf rather than occupying one of the storage surfaces.
Running the wiring before closing the shelves kept cords from crossing the pantry walls after installation.
LED Strips Put Light Under Each Shelf
COB LED strips sit inside aluminum diffuser channels beneath the shelves, sending light across the level below instead of relying on the ceiling fixture to reach past every shelf.
The diffuser turns the LEDs into a continuous strip of light and keeps individual diodes from remaining exposed.
Oak Fronts Conceal the Shelf Edges
Stained reclaimed oak covers the front edge of each white shelf. The narrow wood strips conceal the layered shelf construction while matching the oak used for the wall supports.
With the lights switched on, each shelf illuminates the one below it, including the back section where smaller pantry items had been difficult to see.
Lower Shelves Were Sized for Kitchen Appliances
A food processor and KitchenAid mixer now sit together on one of the lower shelves, while the rolling step stool fits beneath them on the floor.
The mixer determined part of the shelf spacing. According to the owner, no other cabinet in the kitchen could hold it, so he measured a shelf around the appliance instead of trying to fit it into a standard opening.
Opening the Door Turns On the Shelf Lights
The LED system connects to a momentary switch mounted in the doorjamb. Opening the pantry door activates the lights, while closing it switches them off.
That feature addresses the problem behind the remodel without adding another switch to remember. Each shelf receives light across its depth as soon as the pantry opens, including the areas where food once disappeared behind other items.
What Changed After
The pantry kept the same footprint, but three dark shelves became five floating shelves with built-in lighting, planned appliance storage, and space for the step stool below. Opening the door now turns on lights beneath every shelf, reaching the deep areas where food had been difficult to find.
