H-E-B Recalls More Than 50 Jalapeño Products Over Salmonella Risk

H-E-B has issued a voluntary recall of more than 50 products containing jalapeños sold at Texas and Louisiana locations because of concerns about potential salmonella contamination.

The San Antonio-based grocer issued the recall on Aug. 14, noting that it stems from NatureBest Precut & Produce LLC’s recall of products containing jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors due to salmonella risk.

This recall follows Taylor Farms’ recall on Aug. 9, over concerns that fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as possibly contaminated with salmonella, were involved.

The affected products were distributed to H-E-B stores between July 3 and Aug. 5 and have been removed from store shelves. According to the company, all products currently available at H-E-B are safe and not affected by the recall.

H-E-B states that consumers who have purchased the affected products should not consume them but discard the products or return them to the place of purchase.

Salmonella Symptoms and Warning Signs

Most people with Salmonella infection have the following symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

• Watery diarrhea that might have blood or mucus
• Stomach cramps that can be severe

Some people also have:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite

Symptoms usually start six hours to six days after infection and usually last four to seven days.

When to Call the Doctor

The CDC advises contacting a doctor for diarrhea or vomiting lasting more than two days, bloody stool or urine, a fever higher than 102 F, or signs of dehydration, including little or no urination, very dark urine, extreme thirst, dry mouth or throat, dizziness or lightheadedness, or crying without tears.
