Motsmann Engineering Launches Wood-Free Squaredrop Camper

Overland Expo Mountain West kicks off tomorrow in Colorado, and a host of trailers are already vying for attention. One name surprisingly missing from that list is Oregon-based startup and specialty vehicle manufacturer Motsmann Engineering. Though absent from the event, the camper maker is still drawing attention for its Outranger camping trailer, which it unveiled recently.

First brought to light by New Atlas, Outranger is an adventure-ready, wood-free composite squaredrop rig built for both paved roads and off-road terrain. The boxy little off-road trailer looks like a hybrid of classic teardrop campers and molded egg-shaped pods.

The trailer boasts an angular profile that maximizes interior headroom compared to traditional curved teardrops, while the gel-coated fiberglass body ensures long-term durability. Not to mention, a squared-off composite shell that gives it a vintage look while maintaining a modern, utilitarian aesthetic.

In terms of size, the Outranger measures 13.5 feet long and stands six feet tall. The trailer weighs 1,450 lbs., making it towable by most midsize SUVs and crossovers. Gear Patrol, which ran a detailed feature on the trailer, says, “It pairs rugged molded construction with a wealth of off-grid-ready options.” That shows up in the build.

Like the E-Leaf OffRoad electric trailer, the Outranger is wood-free in its construction. This implies there is nothing inside prone to rotting or warping down the road. As pointed out by Hi Consumption, instead of the bonded upper and lower shells common in molded fiberglass campers, Motsmann assembles the body from six separate composite panels, each finished in whatever gelcoat color the buyer picks. This ranges from white and gray to military green and sandstone. As for the interior, the kitchen is made of polyurethane-coated fiberglass, and the counter is HDPE. The rest of the interior partitions are made from polymer.

The composite body is mounted on a bolted, fully galvanized 3mm steel chassis. Backing up the chassis is the Timbren 2000 HD independent suspension and electric brakes, riding on 15-inch wheels wrapped in 30-inch Falken Wildpeak tires. The Outranger camper trailer gets power from a 200Ah Renogy lithium battery on a standard 12V system with LED lighting, USB charging, and shore power hookup.

Inside, the Outranger keeps things simple and practical. It features a cabin that stands 55 inches high, making plenty of room to sit on the 82-inch memory-foam bed with a 57-inch shoulder width at its widest point. The trailer is outfitted with two large side doors with windows that bring in fresh air and make getting in and out easy.

Other features include a rooftop rack, a rear hitch receiver, a 255-liter aluminum cargo box up front, and an awning. This comes alongside a roof-mounted vent fan and an array of shelves that come standard for everyday airflow and storage.

The kitchen is positioned at the rear. The hatch opens onto a galley spanning the full width of the trailer. Owners can leave it empty if they already travel with their own gear, or add extras, such as a two-burner stove, a drawer fridge/freezer, and a gravity-fed sink, at their discretion.

Outranger also comes with several other add-on options, including a propane heater and an integrated air conditioner. Motsmann introduced the Outranger this week, with preorders opening September 1 for the 2027 model year. The Outranger camper trailer is priced at $25,950.
