When it comes to lighting any space, I think Japanese design gets so much right. I’m especially drawn to wabi-sabi and fukinsei, where imperfection and purposeful asymmetry are part of the beauty. Who decided every lamp needs to match, or every shade needs to sit perfectly? I’d much rather let a ceramic base have a little wobble, choose a paper shade with an irregular texture, or position a pendant slightly off-centre. We’re craving interiors that feel personal and lived-in, and I think these small moments of imperfection are often what give them that character.
Then there’s Hikari (光), which is less about how much light you have and more about how you experience it — something I think many of us are instinctively drawn to in our homes right now. A single bulb softened through paper, or a ceramic lamp casting a warm glow across a table, can create more atmosphere than flooding a room with brightness.
That’s what I look for in this collection: a handful of gentle pools of light over flat, uniform illumination, because one well-placed lamp can change how a corner feels, and letting parts of a room fall into shadow creates intimacy — all found from my favorite places to shop for lighting.

Maybe the real takeaway from Japanese-inspired lighting is that we don’t need more light; we need to be more thoughtful about where it lands.
