Jasper Morrison’s Flat-Pack Chair Uses 80 Percent Recycled Plastic
Renowned British designer Jasper Morrison designed his first chair for HAY, named Pack Chair. The flat-pack chair is a contemporary reinterpretation of a classic wooden trattoria chair. The idea of this project originated when Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY and creative director of furniture and lighting, spotted a small model on a shelf in Morrison’s studio during a visit.
“Everything we do needs to be relevant and original. We were talking about being a bit more radical with this typology. What if we could make it flat-packed?” said Hay. The objective of making Pack Chair was clear: to create one of the most accessible chairs in Morrison’s body of work without compromising the quality and intention behind it.
At first glance, it may look simple, like a common chair we see in everyday life, but it conceals a high level of technical aspects. The back of the seat is made from 80 percent post-consumer recycled polypropylene blended with wood fibers. It helps reinforce the material and gives it subtle tactile quality.
The legs are made from solid oak and are fixed with a curved backrest. An optional plywood backrest balances the contemporary look of the plastic chair. The Pack Chair is available in two variants: plywood backrest and upholstered seat cover with wide color options, making it versatile enough for homes, shops, and commercial settings.

The product will be shipped flat-packed. Every part of the chair is designed for disassembly, renewal, and repair. If any component breaks or is misplaced, you can change the component rather than replacing the entire chair. The Pack chair is made for the long term.
There is no word on the pricing of the Pack Chair, but if you wish to purchase the Pack Chair 11 variant, Finnish Design Shop has it listed for $275.
