Marsh’s emergence has made the 2022 trade one that’s continuously revisited in Philadelphia, particularly as former top catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe endures a difficult career path since leaving the organization.

“O’Hoppe, a former top prospect who was acquired by the Angels from the Phillies for Brandon Marsh in 2022, had struggled in 2026 with a .209/.271/.295 batting line and four home runs in 75 games,” MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry reported. “On the defensive end, he ranks last among all catchers with -11 catcher framing runs and second-worst with -10 framing runs. He’s also in the 25th percentile among catchers with a 1.97 sec. pop time.”

And now, after another major career change, O’Hoppe has offered a painful assessment of his time since leaving the Phillies.

“Whether on the field or off it, I didn’t like myself,” O’Hoppe said on Sunday, according to a translated report from Japanese MLB.com reporter Ayako Oikawa. “The four years with the Angels were the most painful four years of my baseball life.”

O’Hoppe’s time with Los Angeles once appeared to be the beginning of a promising career. The Angels acquired him from Philadelphia at the 2022 trade deadline, when he was regarded as one of the Phillies’ top organizational prospects.

Instead, injuries, inconsistency and the challenges of playing for a struggling Angels organization complicated his development.

The 26-year-old has now been traded to the Texas Rangers along with reliever Chase Silseth in exchange for third-base prospect Angel Arredondo. The move gave O’Hoppe another chance to reset his career.

His comments to Oikawa came as he made a return to the major leagues with the chance to revitalize his career.

“Logan O’Hoppe returned to the majors for the first time in nearly a month on Sunday,” Evan Grant wrote for The Dallas Morning News. “A lot has changed. His confidence. His free agency clock. And his perspective. Instead of being with the Los Angeles Angels, he was facing them as a member of the Rangers.”

For O’Hoppe, the Rangers represent an opportunity to move beyond a chapter he clearly remembers painfully. A strong Triple-A showing after the trade out of Los Angeles gave him reason for optimism, but his latest comments suggest the next stage of his career is about more than statistics.

It is also about finding a place where he can rediscover the player — and person — he wants to be.
