But they’re only one part of the kitchen design story, and those dark cabinets need to be paired with the right kitchen countertop ideas if you want them to really work for your design.

Your choice of color here will inform how your kitchen feels a lot — whether you’re aiming for a bright, contemporary look or a more traditional design, this is the choice that really sets the tone. So what to pick? Here are your options, according to kitchen designers.

1. Soft Neutrals

Think deep charcoal, black stone, or a patterned dark marble. This certainly proves dark on dark can be anything but gloomy.

“It feels very luxurious, and in spaces with lots of natural light it doesn’t feel too dark,” she adds.
