Facing diminished economic prospects, many young people see not flawed institutions in need of gradual reform, but predatory systems robbing them of their future. Across South Asia, this sense has animated powerful protest movements, some of which could shape their countries’ political trajectories for decades to come.
NEW DELHI—In the last five years, six youth-led, anti-establishment uprisings have fundamentally reshaped South Asia’s political landscape. The movements had much in common: they all reflected young people’s aspirations, digital savvy, economic frustrations, and disillusionment with governing elites. But the political systems in which they unfolded process grievances in vastly different ways, leading to sharply divergent outcomes.
