Dyson New AI-powered Electric Toothbrush Costs the Same as Roomba

We are days away from IFA 2026, and tech announcements have started flooding both my feed and emails. The latest one comes from Singaporean–British multinational company Dyson, which has unveiled an AI-powered electric toothbrush dubbed the Dyson CameraJet.

The brand-new toothbrush is garnering headlines for two main reasons: first, it comes from the house of Dyson, and second, its price, which carries a whopping $499 tag in the US. To put the price into context, many vacuums in the Roomba catalog cost less than the Dyson CameraJet. In fact, the electric toothbrush is more expensive than some of Dyson’s own vacuum cleaners. Before we understand what makes the Dyson CameraJet worth $500, it’s important to understand the relevance of the announcement first.

Dyson had a September 1 embargo attached to the launch press release, but to its bad luck, the images apparently leaked on Reddit a day prior. The leak, however, couldn’t contain the buzz the toothbrush received once the embargo lifted, with a flurry of news announcements and takes from media outlets across the globe, from Tech Radar to The Verge.

Personally, the announcement timing comes as a surprise to me, as I was expecting Dyson to reveal the gadget at Dyson Unveiled, its yearly event that runs parallel to IFA. Last year at Dyson Unveiled, the company aimed to penetrate inside your home with an array of vacuum cleaners; this year, it plans to penetrate your mouth (pun intended) with a camera-equipped toothbrush.

The early announcement makes me think Dyson might actually have something wild in store for us that it’s still secretive about. My only hope is that it’s not about the robotic arm, because technology has moved multiple tiers since then, and an arm would be of little interest to anyone watching the rise of humanoids.

Getting back to the topic, Dyson claims its newly launched toothbrush can do a bunch of things. This ranges from camera viewing and gap finding to jet washing, liquid flossing, mouthwash dispensing, technique teaching, live streaming, plaque blasting, and precision cleaning, all of which the brand listed in its press release. But the question is what problem the gadget is actually trying to solve, considering similar and more pocket-friendly alternatives already exist in the market.

To elaborate on its features, Dyson cited a dozen studies in its press release, which Man of Many curtailed down to three core problems: average brushing time, low flossing rates, and not knowing whether you’ve brushed properly. The blog reports that Dyson’s R&D team worked on these areas, and with the launch of the CameraJet, the company promises that it’s the only toothbrush with a camera powered by Gap Optical Targeting to identify gaps between teeth and precision-floss while you brush.

Gap Optical Targeting analyzes 28 live images per second to identify and target gaps between teeth in real time, triggering a jet burst of mouthrinse where it’s needed, reportedly within 100 milliseconds of spotting a gap. The images and footage from the livestream can be viewed on Dyson’s MyDyson app. The company, however, claims it doesn’t send the footage to the cloud or store it on the device, and that the camera only activates when you switch on live view or auto-jet mode.

As detailed in CNET’s coverage, the camera itself is a 100,000-pixel macro lens mounted under the brush head, paired with a machine learning system that Dyson says was “trained on more than 470,000 dental images collected during development.” Rather than the narrow, needle-style jet used in traditional water flossers, the CameraJet fires what Dyson calls “a conical jet, a wider, gentler spray drawn from a 12.5ml reservoir that refills at the charging dock.”

The unit ships in two finishes, Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink, and comes with a charging and refill dock, a travel case, two brush heads, and Dyson’s own non-foaming toothpaste and mouthrinse formulated so the camera can see clearly through the suds.
