FC Barcelona legend Robert Lewandowski has offered his thoughts on the club’s signing of Spain captain Rodri during an interview with Radio MARCA.
Ending four glorious years at the Spotify Camp Nou, Lewandowski joined the Chicago Fire this summer when his Barca contract expired on June 30.
In a busy summer just like that in 2022 which brought the likes of ‘Lewy’ and Raphinha to Catalonia, however, Rodri has been the marquee signing made by Sporting Director Deco and Head Coach Hansi Flick.
Winning three La Liga titles in Blaugrana but falling short in the Champions League during his tenure, Barca needs Rodri’s experience according to the Pole.
“He’s a player who knows what the team needs, (to know) how to play forward, but also how to play a little more in defense. It’s an experience that I think this team needs,” Lewandowski said.
“He is a player who not only in the World Cup, but for many years has been playing at the highest level.”
Lewandowski also reflected on his time at FC Barcelona
The veteran, now in the MLS, called his near half decade at the Spotify Camp Nou “four very beautiful years”.
“But there is a moment when you have to do something else, a new step, and now I’m very happy,” he claimed.
“It’s normal, not only because I’m leaving Europe, but also because I’m going to the United States.”
“I’m not a very emotional man, rather cold, but I’m always there to support and help FC Barcelona and my former teammates,” Lewandowski added. “I hope that in the end I can also celebrate some titles with [them].”
FC Barcelona didn’t arrange a direct replacement for Robert Lewandowski
The recently closed transfer window saw Barca lose not just Lewandowski but also World Cup winning goal scorer Ferran Torres.
Though there was a failed pursuit of Julian Alvarez which in the end amounted to nothing, the club effectively didn’t bring in anyone to replace either striker.
Instead, Flick has managed to convert one of his wingers in Raphinha into a number nine to great success.
Thus far across the first three games of 2026/2027, the Brazilian has scored five goals to pull ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe in the top scoring ranks for the Pichichi award.
