The New York Yankees have spent decades establishing themselves as Major League Baseball’s most valuable franchise, but the latest record-setting sale of an MLB team has provided another reminder of just how much baseball’s biggest brands are worth.
That sale came from an unexpected source and caught plenty of fans off guard, given the long history under its standing owner.
Stan Kroenke, who already owns the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche, agreed to purchase a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from longtime owner Arte Moreno in a deal that values the franchise at a record-setting $4 billion.
“Billionaire Stan Kroenke, owner of the Rams, Nuggets and Avalanche, swooped in Tuesday to rescue the Angels from baseball’s purgatory,” Alejandro Avila reported for Fox News. “Kroenke Sports & Entertainment is buying the franchise for $4 billion — making it the most expensive sale in Major League Baseball history.”
The blockbuster transaction did more than end Moreno’s ownership tenure. It also underscored the rapidly increasing value of MLB franchises, with the latest valuation figures putting the Yankees in a financial class of their own.
New York Yankees Get $12 Billion Update After Record-Setting Purchase Ups Value Of MLB Teams
Following the historic purchase agreement, all MLB teams saw their own prospective values increase, with the Yankees getting a particularly noteworthy update from CNBC’s valuations.
“The average MLB team is now worth $4.04 billion, 37% more than our MLB valuations in March,” Michael Ozanian noted for the outlet. “The New York Yankees top the list with a value of $12 billion, 28% more than in March.”
That figure represents a remarkable jump for a franchise that was already the most valuable team in baseball. The Yankees’ $12 billion valuation is nearly three times the new MLB average and demonstrates the enormous premium attached to the organization’s brand, market and long-established revenue base.
The latest number also comes despite the Yankees not winning a World Series since 2009. Their financial standing, however, has remained unmatched across baseball.
“The franchise has ranked No. 1 on Forbes’ list of MLB team values every year since the inaugural ranking in 1998,” according to Forbes’ own valuation, which placed the Yankees at $8.5 billion as of March 2026. “And on Forbes’ annual list of the 50 most valuable teams across all sports, the Yankees have been as high as No. 2, most recently in 2023, when they were topped only by the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.”
Stunning $4 Billion Sale Creates Big Change For New York Yankees
The Angels’ record sale provides an important piece of context for the Yankees’ latest valuation. Los Angeles has endured years without postseason success, yet Kroenke’s purchase still established a new benchmark for MLB franchise transactions.
That suggests the value of owning a major league team extends well beyond current on-field performance. Market size, media rights, stadium opportunities, branding and long-term revenue potential all contribute to what buyers are willing to pay.
For the Yankees, those advantages have been magnified for decades. The franchise remains baseball’s financial benchmark, and the Angels’ $4 billion sale only makes the gap between MLB’s biggest brands and the rest of the league more striking.
