A Gentle Transition to the Fall Season at Home

This post is in partnership with Wayfair

August and September have always felt like a lovely in-between season to me—a time to begin preparing our home for the “ber” months ahead.

For me, welcoming fall to our home has never been only about decorating with pumpkins. I do love pumpkins, but I focus first on a feeling. A mindset. A gentle shift in the mood of our home.

One of my favorite things to do during any seasonal transition is spend a little time making our home feel inviting again. To me, that means freshening up rooms, removing things that no longer inspire or serve us, and usually bringing in a few things each season that inspire me.

I love a home that feels collected over time, so a few thoughtful additions here and there keep our home feeling fresh and like a current reflection of what we love. That way our style can continue to evolve with us rather than feeling stuck in a past season.

I’ve found quite a few pieces at Wayfair over the years that help me add that collected, layered feeling to our rooms. Often even the smallest touches can change the mood of a home, everything from lamps, to pillows, to pretty pitchers and bowls, tea kettles, tables and more.

Often even the smallest touches can change the mood of a home.

As the evenings begin to get a little darker, turning on a lamp instantly makes the whole kitchen feel warmer and more welcoming.

I’ve always wanted to try matching lamps on this counter and found this set on sale at Wayfair that are the perfect size and shape. I love the woven shades—they aren’t too heavy, but still feel so cozy. They come in two colors. They are reminiscent of these other lamps I have around the house from Wayfair (love the shape and shades on these, too!).

Some of my favorite seasonal touches are the ones we can actually enjoy in everyday life. A beautiful bowl filled with apples brings a little taste and color of the season into the kitchen—and I love decor that’s seasonal and good to eat!

Even something as simple as making a bouquet for the table with a few late-summer or early-fall blooms from the grocery store or your own garden (these white hydrangeas miraculously survived the deer that made a snack of many of our plants this summer) can quietly shift the whole feeling of the room. I still love my bunny pitcher and use it year-round!

A pretty pillow is another simple way I love to add a cozy layer of comfort, color and pattern. Even one or two on a smaller sofa can make a room feel more lived-in and welcoming. I especially love a good down pillow that you can sink into!

I’ve had this pillow for awhile. It’s 100% cotton and reversible and comes with an insert (comes in a few colors!).

This blue and white rug is a favorite of mine in every season. It’s washable and has a grippy back so it doesn’t slip!

I have still been enjoying my woven planter that I got a few years ago. I have a lot of fun styling it different ways throughout the year!

This blue and white vase is one of my favorite timeless pieces I’ve added recently. It’s substantial enough to make a statement all on its own. I’ve loved it on our mantel and now it’s filling this shelf perfectly. Sometimes, going for a larger piece is the easiest way to make an impact (with less stuff!).

And this transition to a new season isn’t only about what we add to our rooms. The simple rhythms we practice at home can help us look forward to the season even before it officially arrives. We are enjoying this gentle shift in our homes and preparing for the new season with HomeBodies in The HomeBody House right now, it’s my favorite thing to do!

Regardless of the weather outside or the date on the calendar, it’s never too early to begin creating a home that feels a little warmer, softer, and more inviting. 🤎
