PE poised to join $3.5tn M&A revival, Goldman says

Private equity firms could be on the verge of joining the global M&A resurgence, with buyout groups sitting on around $1.5tn of capital that could increasingly be deployed into acquisitions, according to a report by Bloomberg citing comments from a senior Goldman Sachs executive.

Matt McClure, the investment bank’s global co-head of investment banking, said there were early indications that private equity buyers were becoming more active after strategic corporate acquirers drove much of this year’s dealmaking.

He noted that the significant pool of private equity capital available for investment would eventually need to be put to work, with M&A likely to account for a meaningful portion.

Global M&A and related transactions have reached about $3.5tn so far this year, according to Bloomberg data. Private equity buyouts, however, have accounted for just $286bn of that total, representing 8.2% across 680 deals out of 30,384 transactions.
