For inspiration, we’re turning to the mid-century period when the ‘gossip’ seating formation was in its heyday, which takes us to Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman’s living room in 1958. So, what does a living room layout like Paul and Joanne’s look like in practice? Natalie Prince, storage expert at fitted furniture specialists Sharps explains: ‘A conversation-first living room is a space designed around people rather than the television. Instead of all seating facing towards the TV screen, furniture such as sofas and armchairs are arranged so that people naturally face each other. Seating is grouped around a coffee table or fireplace, and the TV is either moved off centre-stage or hidden away entirely.’
Furthermore, as we alluded to earlier, this look is emerging as a major interior design trend for 2026. ‘After years of screens dominating our downtime, people are now craving spaces that encourage us to slow down, unwind and connect with people, whether it’s catching up with friends at the weekend or making more time to connect as a family in the evening, the living room is where that now happens,’ says Natalie.
She continues: ‘Hybrid working plays a part too: if your home doubles as your office, many of us want at least one room that feels calm and is screen-free by design. There’s also a broader shift towards hosting at home rather than going out, so people want a space that works for entertaining, not just nights in watching TV or movies.’
Luckily, replicating the warmth and connection of Paul and Joanne’s living room is easier than it might look. Natalie advises: ‘Start with the layout, pull seating away from the walls and angle it inwards so people can face each other at a comfortable distance, around 2.5 metres is the sweet spot for easy conversation. Add a shared focal point like a coffee table, fireplace or statement lighting rather than the TV, but keep it simple.’
‘Next, tackle clutter, because a conversational living space needs a calm backdrop,’ she adds. ‘Visual noise, such as trailing cables, stacked remotes, and overflowing shelves, can be surprisingly distracting. Built-in or fitted storage is the most effective fix, as it uses awkward alcoves and full wall height to hide everyday clutter, and you can even conceal the TV behind doors when it’s not in use.’
As with all spaces, the personality is what really makes this look shine. Natalie concludes: ‘Finally, layer in warmth, use lamps at different heights instead of a single overhead light, soft textures, and a rug to help anchor the seating area and make it more of the focal point of the room. The goal is to create a living space that makes people want to sit down, stay a while and actually talk.’
