The Edge’s Malibu Estate is a Study in Living Privacy
In the late 1990s, The Edge bought a Spanish Revival estate in Malibu, California. Set into a coastal hillside, the property overlooks the Pacific, with terraced architecture that follows the slope. Instead of enclosing the home with conventional walls, however, he took a softer approach – using trees and dense plants for privacy to screen the property from view.
The landscaping works in layers, with tall palm trees framing the white stucco exterior and helping to block sightlines to the upper balconies. Closer to the ground, coastal melaleuca and Indian Laurel Fig fill in the gaps, creating a dense green buffer around the living spaces.
It’s simple but feels so beautiful compared to a more traditional garden fence idea. The planting adds seclusion without making the hillside feel closed off – and it’s replicable beyond Southern California. A palm is an especially easy place to start, bringing that same sense of height and privacy to a garden without the heaviness of a fence. This palm tree from Amazon is a classic for a reason.

Trees can be particularly useful when privacy is the goal, says Charlotte McGrattan, a garden expert and Hardy Nursery Stock Buyer at Hillier Garden Centre and Nurseries.
‘If you’re looking for a natural way to add privacy to your garden, trees are a fantastic solution,’ she says. ‘Tall or dense varieties create a beautiful living screen, shielding your outdoor space from prying eyes while also softening noise from the surroundings.’
This comes into play at The Edge’s home. The melaleuca and fig trees form a layer around the lower terraces, while the palms bring height and structure above them. Together, they create a sense of enclosure without the heaviness of a solid wall.
A privacy planting scheme can also be an opportunity to bring more character to a Mediterranean garden. ‘For a more decorative touch, you can also opt for ornamental trees like Japanese Maple or flowering trees such as Dogwood,’ Charlotte says.
The Edge’s choices are suited to California’s climate, but the same principle can work almost anywhere. The success comes from combining different heights, shapes, and types of foliage, which creates depth while keeping neighboring views at bay.
And the benefits go beyond aesthetics. Trees can add texture and greenery to a space while supporting wildlife and improving air quality, as Charlotte explains.
‘Not only do these trees offer privacy, but they also enhance the overall beauty of your garden with their vibrant foliage, blossoms, and unique characteristics,’ she says.
‘Beyond their aesthetic appeal, trees contribute to the health of your environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, which improves air quality. The Silver Birch, for example, can absorb up to 3,100 kilos of CO2. Trees also provide habitat and food sources for local wildlife, enriching the biodiversity of your area.’
At The Edge’s estate, the planting softens the stucco architecture and helps the home sit more naturally within its coastal setting. It’s a beautiful reminder that privacy doesn’t always need to take the form of a harsher wall or fence. When used strategically, the right trees can offer just as much seclusion, while making the exterior look more considered in the process.
